Technical – Barrier Systems

Back to homepage

The Technical Committee on Barrier Systems (TC-B) is dedicated to the development of geosynthetics systems and associated technologies. This committee promotes the knowledge, technology, research findings, design, and construction methodologies related to geosynthetic barrier applications, such as guarding against seepage loss, preventing infiltration, improving the flow of fluids, protecting groundwater, and isolating contaminated soils in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering.

The Main Objectives of the TC-B are:

  • Promotion and distribution of information on the newest developments in barrier geosynthetics materials applications and performance
  • Integration between TC-B efforts and those of organizers of upcoming IGS Conferences to organize technical sessions
  • Collaboration with international sister societies to produce joint technical documents
  • Collaborative work with IGS Chapters to offer short courses and other educational activities
  • Engagement of young professionals who will promote the use of geosynthetics among the next generation of engineers
  • Organization of conferences or a series of conferences focused on specialty topics
  • Creation of new communication channels among IGS Members
  • Promotion of the IGS and the geosynthetics industry at large in events and venues where geosynthetics have traditionally been underrepresented, and
  • Contribution to the IGS Journals by working with journal editors on special thematic issues

The Committee is Currently Pursuing the Following Tasks:

  • The TC-B has recently decided to create two new sub-groups. The first group will be dedicated to barrier systems in mining applications, while the second group will focus on barrier systems for coal ash disposal.
  • Multiple language translations of the most recent IGS leaflet, produced by the TC-B have just been added to the IGS website. The Education Committee, along with the Technical Committee Coordination Task Force worked on the translation project together. The document, Geosynthetic Barriers: Application and Benefits has been translated into English, Mandarin, Japanese, French, and Spanish. Plans are in the works to translate the leaflet into Italian and German.

Recent Meetings of the TC-B

The IGS held a workshop on Geosynthetic Barrier Systems at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, 14 September 2015. The workshop, organized by the TC-B, was held during the XVI European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ECSMGE) in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The ECSMGE workshop program included papers presented on:

  • Introduction and Framework of IGS TC-Barriers.
  • Barriers in Coal Ash Applications in North America.
  • Durability of Geomembranes in Hydraulic Applications.
  • Geosynthetics for Fukushima Recovery.
  • Barrier Systems for Noise Barriers with Contaminated Soils.

Future Activities of the TC-B

The TC-B has actively promoted upcoming event opportunities, as well as solicited and collected papers on important barrier topics. Workshop sessions for 2016 include:

  • GeoAmericas 2016 to be held in Miami, Florida, USA 10-13 April 2016.
  • ASCE GeoCongress to be held in Chicago, Illinois, USA 14-18 August 2016.
  • EuroGeo 6 to be held in Istanbul, Turkey 25-28 September 2016.
  • GeoAsia 2016 to be held in New Delhi, India 8-11 November 2016.
